Dubai: The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has announced the 20 teams who will compete to design, build, and operate smart houses for the Solar Decathlon Middle East (SDME) and a chance to win Dh10 million.

SDME was created through an agreement between the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Dewa, and the United States Department of Energy. The decathlon challenges teams to design and build smart houses that operate solely on solar power. The houses must be able to combat the seasonal heat, dust and high humidity experienced in the region.

The selected teams included the seven universities from the UAE, one from Oman, one from Qatar, one from Saudi Arabia, one from Jordan, one from Pakistan, two from Italy, and one each from the Netherlands, Romania, Malaysia, Taiwan, Serbia, Australia, and the US.

The solar-powered houses will be unveiled in October 2018 at the SDME’s site.
