Dubai: The Dubai Metro continues to ride the popularity wave as it registers a consistent rise in its ridership reflected by the latest figures revealed by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

In the first three months of this year, more than 40 million people used the Metro, up from 33.3 million in the same period last year.

“The number of Metro riders during the first three months of this year constitute a solid indicator that the Dubai Metro has become one of the prime transit means commanding the attention of Dubai residents, visitors and tourists, offering smooth mobility and access to key parts of the city in a way that measures up to the needs and expectations of users,” said Abdullah Yousuf Al Ali, Acting CEO of the RTA Rail Agency.

“This year has witnessed a remarkable growth in the number of Metro riders compared to the previous year; which has always been the core of our plans tailored to delivering a whole host of initiatives and service improvements capable of encouraging all community members to use the Metro as a primary transit means characterised by security, luxury and safety.”

Passengers numbers on both lines have seen a sizeable increase with the Red Line transporting 26.1 million passengers in the first three months of this year compared with 21.8 million in the same period in 2013.

The total number of users on the Green Line in the first quarter of this year soared to 14.5 million riders compared to 11,5 million riders last year.

Among stations, Deira City Centre station has been most popular on the Red Line with a footfall of 1.84 million in three months, while Al Fahidi station on the Green Line is the biggest draw with a passenger count of 1.65 million.
