Abu Dhabi: Motorists involved in minor accidents must remove their vehicles from the road in order to avoid traffic obstruction and reduce traffic congestion. Failure to do so will attract a fine of Dh200, the Ministry of Interior announced on Saturday.

“Motorists who are involved in minor accidents, face sudden malfunctions in their tyres or mechanical breakdown of their vehicles should remove the vehicle immediately or park in the nearest location that does not obstruct traffic,” Hussain Ahmad Al Harthy, director of Abu Dhabi’s Traffic and Patrol Department, said.

“Starting from September 15, drivers who fail to remove their vehicles from the roads will be fined. If you are incapable of changing the tyre or fixing your vehicle, do not hesitate to call 999 for assistance immediately,” he added.

According to the Federal Traffic Law, when a car accident occurs and does not result in a physical injuries, parties involved should park their vehicles in the nearest safe location to avoid traffic fines.

Minor accidents mostly lead to an even bigger problem if traffic is obstructed. Therefore, the ministry has called for cooperation from motorists to keep the traffic flow smooth.

Abu Dhabi Police had earlier launched a safety campaign during Ramadan which aimed at encouraging motorists to comply with traffic laws, reduce speed, pay attention on roads, use seat belts, avoid using hand-held mobile phones while driving, and maintain a safe distance between vehicles.

The initiative also urged drivers to avoid blocking roads or exits and to refrain from parking randomly.
