Dubai: Road diversions in the Al Wasl area near Al Safa Park have been reworked to make way for construction work of the Dubai Canal project.

Traffic flow on the eastern side of the Al Wasl area, near Umm Ammara exit towards Shaikh Zayed Road, has returned to normal with all detours moving westward.

New detours have now been put in place by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) contractors working on the project, allowing for the work to progress smoothly, while making sure it doesn’t inconvenience residents and other motorists visiting the area.

“We have been informing the residents of the area by visiting their houses and providing the leaflets with maps to explain the new detours and road blocks,” said an official working on the project.

In a major diversion, traffic heading north from Al Wasl Street, passing Al Safa Park intersection, cannot enter 55th street, which runs parallel to Al Safa Park on the northern side. Motorists looking to enter the area will have to drive further down and turn right on to 49th street.

Almost half of 55th street on the western side also has one-way traffic, moving only eastwards, while 49th street has traffic moving both ways.

Moving further into the area, 30th B, 40th B and 45th streets will all have traffic moving both ways, while 51st, 53rd and 2 D streets have traffic moving only one way.

Entrances to Al Safa Park have been closed from all sides and the park can now be accessed only from the main gate.

The prestigious development, which was launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in October 2013, will see the extension of Dubai Creek by three kilometres, turning Bur Dubai into an island ringed by the Creek water on three sides and the Arabian Sea on the fourth.

Currently, work on the Dubai Canal project is in full swing with all three phases under progress simultaneously.

The project is expected to be ready by mid-2016.
