Dubai: Some of the world’s greatest photographs will be put on public display in Dubai in March 2016, officials said on Monday.

A temporary museum will be built to showcase the photos for the Global Perspective on Photography exhibition, scheduled for March 16-19 in Dubai Design District.

Organisers said the event will be a milestone for Dubai and the wider world of photography.

For the display, 19 curators will select works from 25 countries, including the UAE, representing “some of the greatest works of the 20th century”. The show will include “museum-quality international works by many of the most celebrated working photographers today”.

The event is being organised by the Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum International Photography Award (HIPA) in partnership with the World Photography Organisation (WPO).

Details of the photographers or photos were not available during Monday’s announcement as the event is still passing through a “filtration period”, HIPA secretary-general Ali Bin Thalith said.

Bin Thalith added that the show would also create a platform for Emirati photographers and generate wider public interest in photography as well.

HIPA is creating a Dubai Photography Season next March, with workshops and other photography-led events meant to place “Dubai’s photography scene on the international map”, he said.

Among the 19 curators is Jasem Al Awadhi, an award-winning Emirati photographer. The head curator is Zelda Cheatle, a renowned UK-based curator, editor, consultant and lecturer.

WPO CEO Scott Gray said the event also stems from “the need to create a truly global stage for photography”.
