Sharjah: Khalid Hurriyah, the man at the centre of the dirty dancing wedding video in Khor Fakkan, issued an emotional apology on Tuesday.

“I made a big mistake and offended many people. I am very sorry,” Hurriyah, a Sharjah businessman and former chairman of the UAE Fans Association football team, said.

The 53-year-old Hurriyah, who is in Kuwait on work, issued the apology on a public programme on Ajman Radio.

Hurriyah also sought a pardon from His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

Dr Shaikh Sultan on Monday issued a letter to Sharjah Police ordering a probe into the incident after the video went viral on the internet and triggered outrage in the community.

Hurriyah said he has never entered a police station in his life.

When he returns to the UAE, Hurriyah is expected to surrender at the Khor Fakkan police station in the presence of his lawyer.

On Monday, the Sharjah Sports Club banned Hurriyah from entering the club till further notice.

Sharjah Police said in a statement on Monday that Hurriyah — a “public figure in the UAE” — was captured in a video posted on the internet dancing with a woman in a manner not befitting public etiquette.
