ABU DHABI: Two Arab nationals were arrested by the Abu Dhabi Police for selling 10,000 pills of a restricted drug through social media sites.

An undercover police officer struck a deal with them for buying 3,000 capsules for a price of Dh55,000 after they were found promoting drugs on social media, particularly among youngsters.

Colonel Taher Ghraib Al Daheri, director of the police’s anti-narcotics department, said after an extensive investigation, police found out that the two Arab nationals had been promoting consumption of drugs among youngsters through social media sites and were trying to sell some quantity of the restricted drug they possessed, Colonel Al Daheri said.

Police formed a team to arrest the culprits. The undercover officer finalised the deal and scheduled to meet the peddlers for delivery at midnight. Police arrested the main suspect, aged 36, when he handed over 3,000 capsules of the drug, which is categorised as controlled and not permitted to be sold without a physician’s prescription.

Later, the police also arrested his compatriot, aged 22, who had entered the country on a visit visa. The police seized 7,000 more capsules from his accommodation.

Both suspects admitted to the crime and were referred to the Public Prosecution.
