Ajman: The Public prosecution in Ajman is questioning five suspects who allegedly confronted police officers who tried to break up a quarrel.

The five, armed with long knives and swords during the skirmish, are also accused of attempting to run over police using a vehicle.

The group, including four Emiratis and one person of Iranian nationality, have been referred to Public prosecution on charges of assault and not obeying police orders. The charges have yet to be tested in court.

Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Saif Al Matroushi, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department at Ajman Police, said during a press conference held at Ajman police headquarters last week that the confrontation started after police responded to a brawl involving knives and swords in Al Rawdah area.

When police arrived, they saw two Emirati youths and one youth from Iranian nationality quarrelling with metal swords. The suspects were asked by police to surrender but they allegedly refused and turned to confront the police officers.

Police arrested a 26-year-old Emirati while the other two fled the scene.

Two youths identified as A.S. and G.G.S., both aged 20, fled on the main road, police said.

Two police officers tried to block the road with their police patrol cars and fired warning bullets to make them stop their car and surrender. But the suspects continued driving and knocked the officers down with their car and crashed into the police vehicle that was blocking their way. On searching their car, the police found four swords and knives in addition to other sharp instruments.

In the meantime, another Emirati suspect, identified as 25-year-old A.B.S., turned himself into police.

Police later arrested the Iranian suspect from Sharjah.

The injured police officers were taken to Khalifa Hospital for treatment while a team was set up to track down the men who fled.

Lieutenant Colonel Al Matroushi said the police will not tolerate such violent activities threatening the lives of people and the security and stability of the society.

Ajman police have launched a campaign in the emirate to confiscate knives found in the hands of youths and urged parents to watch the activities of their children.
