Sharjah: Two people suspected of stealing Dh1.8 million from a co-worker’s apartment have been arrested by Sharjah Police.

The suspects, identified as L.A. and M.O., both of Arab nationalities, are in custody, said the police.

Colonel Ebrahim Al Ajel, director of the Criminal Investigation Department, said police received a complaint from a company’s employee saying his apartment in Al Tawoun area had been burgled while he was outside and that the thieves had made off with Dh1.8 million which belonged to the company.

Police investigation led to L.A. who worked in the same company and police found out that he had hatched a conspiracy with another person to steal the sum.

Police arrested L.A. from Sharjah and a search of his car led to the discovery of Dh700,000 stashed inside the door trim. The suspect led the police to M.O. who was arrested in cooperation with Dubai Police.

Investigation revealed that L.A. disguised himself in a woman’s garb and entered the apartment with a copy of the key he had obtained from the owner while M.O. waited outside the building.

Police recovered part of the stolen money as the rest had been transferred outside the country.

The suspects confessed to stealing the money, police said, and also revealed their modus operandi.

The case has been referred to the public prosecution.

Col Al Ajel urged business owners to keep large sums only in banks or in a safe place within their organisation, and to not leave money with any employee even if they trusted him/her.
