Sharjah: A baby boy with a congenital defect found abandoned in a Sharjah area is in a stable condition in Al Qasimi Hospital.

The baby was found on a public road pavement in the Muweilah area on August 10.

Doctors were happy to report that the infant, who was born with a congenital defect, has successfully come out of surgery.

A surgical team performed a successful operation on the infant to place the infant’s abdominal organs inside.

Doctors at the hospital said the condition of the baby is stable and he will be handed over to the child protection committee in Sharjah after his health improves.

The incident was reported to Al Gharb police who took the baby to Al Qasimi Hospital around 9am on August 10.

The boy — who was estimated to be a few days old when he was rescued from the pavement — was reported to be in poor health and was born with the stomach sticking outside his body.

Officials at Al Qasimi Hospital said at the time that the congenital defect would be corrected by surgery when the child’s condition was more stable.

This kind of defect can be diagnosed during pregnancy, officials said, through screening tests to check for birth defects and other conditions.

Officials at Al Qasimi Hospital said the baby’s congenital defect has a prevalence rate of one in 4,000 cases.

Police said on Thursday that they are trying to track down and arrest the baby’s parents for child endangerment among other possible criminal violations.
