Dubai A police sergeant, along with two other Emiratis, appeared in court to face drug and bribery charges.

Records show the sergeant, 27, was bribed with four pills of Tramadol to sneak the drug to other suspects in Rashidiya Police Station. “On the day of the incident in October 2013, he advised me to leave early,” a colleague of the suspect told prosecutors, “I told him I had to stay at my post since it wasn’t right for him to stay alone at the detention center. It wasn’t the first time he had asked one of us to leave early.”

Court documents show the witness noticed the sergeant and the two detainees were close. “He told me one of the suspects was a friend from school, while the other was suffering heart problems and he was arranging for him to be transferred to a hospital.”

Records show a trusted source informed the sergeant’s superiors he had been supplying Tramadol to some detainees. “We launched an investigation and confirmed the report,” a police captain told prosecutors, “so we took him in for questioning.”

The sergeant reportedly admitted to striking a deal with a detainee the same day. “He told us he was to deliver Dh3,100 to one of the detainee brothers in exchange for two Tramadol pills, but he did not get the money yet. He also said he smuggled cigarette packs containing Tramadol to the one of the other suspects in the case.”

Police officers found the two other suspects in the detention center after they showed signs of being under the influence. Urine tests proved that the sergeant had been consuming Tramadol and Brosaikledin. The other suspects were found to have been taking a range of drugs including morphine and Tramadol.

The sergeant denied bribery charges but admitted to consuming drugs, while asking court to grant him bail. The second suspect admitted to the charges, whilst the third denied.

The case was adjourned till September.
