Abu Dhabi: An Indian man died in Abu Dhabi while crossing the road from an undesignated area, the Abu Dhabi Police said on Tuesday.

The police also arrested the driver who was trying to flee the country. He fled the accident scene leaving his vehicle there. The accident happened after Mafraq bridge towards Dubai on the outskirts of the capital.

Brigadier General Ali Khalfan Al Daheri, Director of the Central Operations Sector, said, the operation centre received a report on Monday that a person was injured. The patrols began their procedures upon arrival at the scene and came to know that the driver fled the scene. Though the victim was administered first aid, he died due to major injuries.

He explained that the initial report showed that the cause of the accident was due to the victim crossing the highway from an undesignated place and the victim had also jumped over the iron fences.

Al Daheri said the ongoing investigation revealed the Asian driver was nabbed within less than two hours of the accident and half an hour before he attempted to leave the country.

The case was referred to the concerned authorities for necessary legal action.

Al Daheri called on drivers to abide by the traffic rules and be aware of sudden occurrences on the road. He also asked people to cross the road from the designated places to avoid similar accidents.
