Sharjah: Two men were arrested on Tuesday for impersonating policemen before taking their possessions and fleeing the scene.

The suspects, who did not have documents to prove their identity, were harassing people on the street, a Sharjah police official said. The pair were identified as S.D.R. and H.R.J.

Al Gharb and Al Heira police stations had received complaints from people in various areas complaining they had been robbed after the suspects showed them fake identification cards.

The suspects took the victims somewhere quiet and then took what they found in their possession, such as wallets and mobile phones.

Target

The suspects confessed to the crime and the case has been transferred to the public prosecutor.

“We found out that the suspects were targeting people who did not have adequate knowledge about police procedures. The suspects spoke to the victims in Arabic and Urdu and were using a forged ID card,” an official said.

The police official urged people to always ask for an identification card when someone claims they are a policeman. Policemen never ask people to show their wallets or demand money from them. If they encounter such people, they should report the matter to the police, he said.
