Dubai: Police in Abu Dhabi arrested a man who not only caused an accident and fled the scene, but who also changed his car’s license plate to avoid authorities. 

Driving away from the scene of a collision is illegal, and according to the UAE’s amended federal traffic law, the failure to stop after an accident will result in a Dh500 fine for light vehicle and Dh1,000 for heavy vehicle, eight black points.

The vehicle will also be confiscated for seven days.

Furthermore, a driver who runs away after causing injuries might faces one month to three years in jail and/or a fine varying between Dh1,000 and Dh20,000.

Brigadier Mohammad Dahi, director of Abu Dhabi Traffic Patrol department said that an investigation was launched and police were soon able to pinpoint the location of the 24-year-old’s whereabouts.

The suspect, a Gulf national, was then arrested and the vehicle was subsequently impounded.
