Abu Dhabi: A man facing charges of possession of fireworks with the intention of trading, has been referred to the Court of Misdemeanour, the Abu Dhabi Public Prosecution said on Wednesday.

The suspect had reportedly met an Asian through social media, to whom he tried to sell 14 cartons of the explosives. After allegedly placing the items in his home with the purpose of using them and selling them through personal marketing, the suspect, a GCC national, was arrested during one of his attempts.

He finally admitted to possessing the items and trading in them, and that he had sold a quantity twice by placing an advertisement through a social media website.

The Public Prosecution requested that the suspect be tried according to the UAE law on weapons, ammunition and explosives.

Police have repeatedly warned against the use of fireworks especially during Eid and national holidays. Gulf News had previously reported a crackdown on those who illicitly sell fireworks and similar items, especially to children. However, after laws were made stricter, many street vendors and small-time supermarkets that used to trade in these items, have stopped doing so altogether for fear of having their store shut down.

Authorities state that many using fireworks inappropriately risk serious injuries, disabilities or even death.
