DUBAI A Pakistani man denied killing his wife, saying “she stabbed herself while she was intoxicated.”

Court documents show the woman’s body was discovered in Ras Al Khaimah in 2010 wrapped in a bedsheet and stuffed into a jute bag. Forensics said a 15cm deep knife wound on the stomach caused her death. She was around 35 years old.

“We were verbally married,” the suspect, 40, told the court, “I did not kill her. She stabbed herself in our apartment while drunk. I took her body to Ras Al Khaimah.”

According to the prosecution, the pair shared an apartment with another couple in the Hamdan area. Their marriage certificate was handwritten and wasn’t validated by authorities.

“They used to drink a lot,” a flat mate told the court. “The victim would claim that her husband would frequently abuse her.”

The suspect reportedly asked his flatmates to take care of his daughter for 10 days as he was going back to Pakistan to get passports for his wife and daughter. “Before he left, he seemed troubled and wouldn’t eat,” the witness said. “He said his wife had stolen his money and left.”

Forensic reports show that the knife wound reached the spinal cord, and it was likely that she did not stab herself. However, no signs of assault or bruises were visible.

Records did not mention how the suspect was arrested, but it’s likely he was extradited. The next hearing is on April 23.
