Ajman: Police have arrested an Asian maid and four people police say assisted her in an assault and theft of an elderly Emarati woman.

The domestic worker and her partners are alleged to have stolen cash in various foreign currencies as well as jewellery after they assulted the elderly woman and tied her hands and legs, police said on Monday.

The stolen items are estimated to be worth Dh95,000, said Lt Col Abdullah Saif Al Matroushi, Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department with Ajman Police, during a press conference.

Lt Col Al Matroushi said the incident took place on October 1 and that the suspects were carrying weapons with them to carry out their crime.

Police ambulance transferred the elderly woman to the hospital for treatment where medical professionals described the woman as psychologically exhausted.

The police team used sniffer dogs to trace the movement of the suspects.

Lt Col Al Matroushi said that the housemaid was working with the family for four years. During the interrogation she told them details of the incident and then led police to the whereabouts of her accomplices in Sharjah.

In cooperation with Sharjah Police, the officers managed to identify the suspects and their location and in less than 24 hours police arrested three of the suspects.

Police team raided the suspects’ residence but the fourth man was not found and police are still searching for him.

After searching the house, police found cash, jewellery as well as invoices of cash transfers worth Dh30,000 sent to the country of one of the suspects who had relations with the housemaid.

Foreign currency, including US dollars, were also seized.

The suspects confessed to their crimes and the case has been referred to the public prosecution, police said.
