Ras Al Khaimah: The body of an Asian housemaid was found hanging inside the house of her sponsor in Shaam area of Ras Al Khaimah on Sunday, said Colonel Salem Rabea, head of Khor Khwair police station.

The 28-year-old maid, identified as Y.K.L., is believed to have committed suicide, he said.

The maid allegedly tied a rope around her neck and used an iron bar to hang herself.

The sponsor’s family discovered the body, which was hanging in a room of the house and reported the incident to police.

They told police they tried to lift up the maid’s body when they saw it in an attempt to save her. But their attempt was in vain as she was already dead.

Police and forensic teams went to the scene after receiving information about the incident. They removed the victim’s body and transferred it to hospital and then to the forensic laboratory for an autopsy.

The reasons that led her to commit suicide remain unknown, Col Rabea said.

He added that officials took fingerprints and other details from the scene to investigate the matter.

The case is with Khor Khwair police station and a police investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, members of the family for whom the maid was working said that during the preliminary interrogations they didn’t realise anything abnormal about her before the incident. She did not complain of any health problems that might have caused her to commit suicide.

Ras Al Khaimah Police warned the public, especially workers and domestic workers, to stop thinking about ending their lives, stressing that it is a criminal act in addition to being against the teachings of Islam.

He urged people to be patient and to seek advice from religious scholars whenever they have problems.
