Ajman: Community Police Patrols in the emirate will replace their sirens with an advanced lighting system that will be seen from a distance of 1km. As many as 50 patrols will be equipped with this system before the end of the year with nine patrols already operational in residential areas.

The patrol vehicles have also been adapted to run on natural gas.

The idea behind this transformation is to eliminate the noise factor of sirens that could disturb the public during emergencies, especially at night. The lights with their high beams are more effective in terms of visibility and also offer a silent way of denoting an emergency.

Brigadier Shaikh Sultan Al Nuaimi, commander-in-chief of Ajman Police, said that this system, used in the US, is the first of its kind in the UAE to be introduced by Ajman.

Brigadier Al Nuaimi explained that the light has a special characteristic which ensures that it is seen from a long distance. These patrols will be deployed across all residential areas to attend to a host of community issues, from potholes in the road or a sewage pipe burst to altercations among the public. “The patrols with night lights will drive around in residential areas to detect any problem without using noisy sirens in the night,” said Brig Al Nuaimi.

A total of 700 security issues in residential areas were reported by the new patrols and referred to the concerned authority for follow ups and resolution, Brig Al Nuaimi said. All community issues are dealt with in strict confidentiality, he informed.

Lieutenant Ebrahim Salem, who drove the idea, said this project took one year to implement.

All the patrols are equipped to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.
