Abu Dhabi: Eight juveniles between the ages of 13-15 have been referred to court for allegedly stealing 11 motorcycles belonging to the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters from the vehicle impound lot at Al Mafraq.

They are also charged with driving the stolen bikes on a main road without obtaining a licence or having the vehicles registered, in addition to abetting in the theft of additional motorcycles.

Investigations at the Family Prosecution in Abu Dhabi revealed that eight individuals trespassed into the impound lot in Al Mafraq several times by jumping over the fence with the intention of stealing motorcycles. The juveniles had reportedly searched for undamaged bikes to steal and then dug under the fence to take out the vehicles.

On the day of the incident, court documents said, the suspects managed to take the bikes out from under the fence outside the lot but only managed to turn one of them on before being caught by a police officer. Seven of the suspects fled and only one was arrested.

Counsellor Ali Mohammad Al Beloushi, Attorney-General of Abu Dhabi, said that this case is a dangerous indicator that should bring the attention of all educational facilities to what is being reflected by the actions of the suspects. These behaviours suggest that the juveniles have challenged the authority of the law and have dared to unlawfully take possessions placed under the protection of the police. Al Beloushi added there is a need to look into the loopholes in upbringing and root causes of their behaviour. He also urged parents to not be lenient when disciplining their children and teaching them respect for the law,
