Sharjah: A four-year-old Syrian girl fell to her death from the window of an eight floor apartment in a high rise building in Sharjah on Wednesday night, police told Gulf News on Thursday.

The incident happened in Al Taawun area of Sharjah at a round 7.15pm.

The child climbed the window, slipped through the grille and fell on the ground.

The mother found the window open and her daughter was not present in the room. She then approached the window and saw her daughter lying on the ground and people gathering around her. The girl died instantly, the police said.

Police patrols and ambulance were called to the scene and her body was taken to Al Qasimi Hospital at around 8pm.

Al Buhaira Police station is investigating the case. Police will summon the parents for interrogation.

Sharjah Police warned parents not to leave their children unattended at home and to instruct housemaids to keep a close watch on children.

Hazardous items should also be kept away from children’s reach, including kitchen knives and gas cylinders.

It also urged the public to lock their windows and to place aluminium barriers to prevent children from falling out.
