Abu Dhabi: Four people have been arrested in the capital on charges of attempted theft, the Abu Dhabi Police announced in a statement sent today (July 17).

In one instance, the suspects were apprehended while trying to steal from a car, while in the other, they broke into an Abu Dhabi apartment.

According to the police, an Asian man was caught stealing contents from a parked car in a residential area. The suspect, who is sponsored by an event management firm, was found to have 10 previous criminal charges. When arrested, police discovered that he had taken a mobile phone from the car. The rest of the stolen items, for which no report has yet been filed with the police, were then recovered from his own residence and car.

Three Asians were also caught for burgling an apartment in Abu Dhabi, and taking a computer and a smartphone. The three had a combined 22 criminal charges against them recorded over the past three years. The suspects attempted to flee. Upon apprehending them, the police found that two are illegal residents, and one of them also has eight previous charges of theft against him. The suspects then led the police to the apartment where they had hidden the stolen goods, and then admitted to their crime.

Colonel Ahmad Al Muhairi, director of the Capital Police Directorate, urged residents to take all safety precautions against burglary and theft. People should lock their cars, even if they are away for a short while, and they should store their valuables carefully when they go on leave, he said. In addition, homes should be securely locked when people are away, especially if the family is on a long vacation.

The officer also asked people to report any suspicious activity to police, or call 8002626, the police safety hotline, to report thefts immediately, even if they pertain to small items of limited value.
