Dubai: Four Asian men have been caught trying to sell 4.7 million Indian rupees in fake banknotes to a Dubai businessman.
“The forgery was among the best we have seen,” Major General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Police Chief for criminal investigation affairs, said. “It could have easily fooled the everyday man and even some banks. It’s a significant catch as counterfeit currencies can damage the local economy.”
According to Maj Gen Al Mansouri, the four men, who are all in their 30s, approached the businessman scheming to buy goods with the fake rupees. However, they soon switched the deal, proposing to sell the rupees in exchange for Dh140,000.
The existing exchange rate put the value of Rs4.7 million at Dh285,000.
“The businessman was given a few samples of the Rs1,000 bills,” Al Mansouri said.
“He brought the bills to us for examination. Our experts were amazed at how detailed and immaculate the forgery was.
“We then supplied the businessman with the Dh140,000 and told him to go ahead with the deal and apprehended the suspects during the exchange in Naif.”
