Dubai: Four Asian men were arrested in Dubai for attempting to sell 4.72 million counterfeit Indian rupees to a businessman.
Major General Khalil Ebrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant to the Dubai Police Chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs, said the bills were very professionally forged that they would have tricked money exchanges and banks.
The four suspects, S.N., M.A., M.F., A.R., all in their thirties, were arrested following an exchange between undercover Dubai police agents in Naif area in Dubai. The suspects admitted that the money was fake.
Maj Gen Al Mansouri explained that the suspects approached a businessman who operated in Naif, and pretended to want to buy foodstuff and pay in rupees. During negotiations they changed their mind and told the businessman that they would sell him the Rs4.72 million for Dh140,000.
According to current exchange rates, Rs4.72 million would be equivalent to approximately Dh287,359.
The businessman, who felt there was something off about the deal, contacted the police, who set up the exchange and arrested the suspects.
The suspects had offered the businessman a few bills to check.
The fake money seized was in denominations of Rs1,000.
