Dubai: New cameras to catch motorists who cut in front of long lines of traffic at turns and exits, will be functional by the end of the year.

Brigadier Kamel Butti Al Suwaidi, Director of the Department of Operations at Dubai Police said they are currently working on placing “Al Mutabea” cameras to catch traffic violators jumping queues at well-known problems areas across the emirate.

The cameras were first announced by Dubai Police in June 2015.

The cameras are mostly set at exits, intersections and turns where motorists illegally try to cut in, bypassing long lines of traffic.

After the first phase, the department will evaluate the results and decide if they would add more.

The “Al Mutabea” camera will monitor roads and automatically fine any car that is not abiding by lane discipline and jumping lanes or driving on the hard shoulder.

The camera will first send the violation report with high-resolution pictures to an officer at the operations room, who will double-check the accuracy of the incident and approve the fine.

The camera has a video-analytics feature, which can analyse the vehicle’s movement.

“Rasd”, another type of camera soon to be installed by Dubai Police, will monitor roads, scan vehicle numbers and alert the police operations room and patrols if any wanted vehicle passes by.

“The Rasd cameras should be placed in 70 locations by June 2016; we have already finished the trial phase,” Brig Al Suwaidi said.

The same camera can be used to search for vehicles by colour and make if the number plate is not available, which helps narrow down the search for violating vehicles.
