Sharjah:A man who allegedly stole a car in Sharjah was arrested within two hours after he ended up in an accident.
The Yemeni suspect took advantage of the car-owner parking his Mercedes car near a Sharjah hotel with its engine running and made off with it.
The Saudi Arabian car-owner immediately lodged a complaint with Sharjah Police that his vehicle with a Saudi Arabia number plate had been stolen in Al Qasimiya area.
Police formed a team, identified the location of the car and found it on a road in Sharjah where it was involved in an accident.
They later tracked down the suspect and arrested him.
The case has been referred to the public prosecution.
Sharjah Police urged the public to report any suspicious behaviour around vehicles or in residential areas by calling 999, 065632222 or the Najeed police service’s toll-free number 800151 or via SMS on 7999.
Motorists in Sharjah face a fine of Dh300 if they leave their vehicles with the engine running.
This is part of a campaign launched by Sharjah Police in September 2012 to curb the practice of leaving cars unattended with the engine running.
