Sharjah: A 30-year-old woman has died after apparently setting herself on fire, an official at Sharjah Police told Gulf News.

The incident happened on April 24 at the woman’s house in Maysaloon area at about 3am.

Gulf News reported that the woman was identified as N.S.J., from Comoros Island, is believed to have suffered first-degree burns and was taken to hospital by her family and then transferred to Al Qasimi Hospital as her condition was reported to be critical over the past days.

She was placed under police guard.

Police said the woman got into heated argument with her family and then poured petrol on herself. She threatened to kill herself if they continued to fight with her.

The family members reportedly challenged the woman who then set herself on fire, according to police.

No one else was injured in the incident, police said.

The police office at the hospital reported the incident to the police operation room and a team from Wasit police station visited the woman and lodged a complaint over the incident.

Meanwhile, police summoned the family members of the woman for questioning.

A police investigation is underway.
