Sharjah: Police are searching for the woman who dumped a dead baby in a garbage bin in Al Saja’a area of Sharjah on Tuesday morning, an official at Sharjah Police told Gulf News.
The body of the newborn, wrapped in a piece of cloth, was found by municipal workers at 10am while on their rounds to collect waste, said police officials. The body was brought to Al Qasimi Hospital and sent to the forensic laboratory for an autopsy. Al Saja’a police station has launched an investigation into the incident.
This is the fourth incident of its kind in September.
On September 25, a three-month-old baby was found abandoned in a Sharjah hospital. The baby was left on a chair at the women’s reception area in Al Kuwaiti Hospital at 4.50pm. She was spotted by a hospital visitor who heard the baby’s cries. The woman reported the incident to the hospital police. Investigations to track down the baby’s parents are under way, police said, adding that the hospital’s surveillance cameras will be examined to identify the mother. The baby is in good health and will be handed over to a child protection committee in Sharjah.
On September 20, a nine-month-old baby was found abandoned, wrapped inside a plastic bag, in the parking lot of Al Safeer Mall in Al Majaz, Sharjah. The man who found the baby said she was lying dangerously close to the front wheel of his SUV, with her umbilical cord still attached, and he spotted her after hearing her cries.
He immediately contacted the authorities. The baby, with Arab features and a “fair complexion”, was handed over to a child protection committee in Sharjah.
On September 4, a three-year-old Indian boy was abandoned by his parents at Khor Fakkan Beach. An official from the Sharjah Children Protection Department earlier told Gulf News that the child only knows his name and could not name his parents. According to the official, the child is in good health and is being provided medical and social care services. The boy was reportedly told by his parents that they had gone to a restaurant and would be back to fetch him.
“My parents went to the restaurant and they will come back,” the boy had told police officers.
Police have yet to identify the boy’s parents.
Last year, four mothers were imprisoned by Sharjah courts after they were found guilty of abandoning their infants, who were born out of wedlock. They were sentenced to one year in jail followed by deportation.
