Abu Dhabi: Barber shops and hairdressers in the capital’s Baniyas East and Al Ghabat area have come under the radar of the Abu Dhabi City Municipality (Al Wathba Municipal Center) for non-compliance with health standards and public health requirements.

The civic body inspected 53 barbershops in the two locations and served warnings to 13 outlets for lack of compliance with standard health practices and use of unlicensed equipment. Some beauty centres and hairdressing salons do comply with the health conditions and decisions issued by the competent bodies, but others do not.

Common offence

“The most common offence reported in these centres is the failure to dispose of expired cosmetics, availability of blends that fall short of the health conditions, some blends do not have labelling or contain herbal mixes or creams of anonymous origin, and storage of some items rendering them exposed to oxidization, and the failure to comply with the cleanliness of equipment and salon,” said Mohammad Ali Al Mansouri, Director of Al Wathba Munic-ipal Center.

“Laser devices found in beauty salons have been confiscated and offences reported against users as they are only licensed for use in specialist plastic surgery or skin care clinics,” he added.

Al Wathba Municipal Center is holding a number of training courses for individuals working in barbershops and salons on the health conditions and standards set for them. “In coordination with competent training entities, the Municipality is inculcating these standards in its training programmes to which employees of salons and beauty parlours are subjected and required to obtain certificates for practicing such professions,” said Al Mansouri.
