Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Police saved a 50-year-old Gulf national from online blackmailers who demanded money from him for not posting his indecent videos on social media.

The cyber criminals in a foreign country had taken the victim’s indecent videos during online interactions with him, said Colonel Tarek Khalfan Al Ghoul, deputy director of Criminal Investigation Department (CID), in a press release issued on Wednesday.

The fraudsters first befriended the victim online seeking his help for fake charities, Al Ghoul said.

After receiving the complaint, the police managed to stop the blackmailers from posting the indecent videos on social media, which would have otherwise reached his friends and relatives in his social media contact list.

The official said Abu Dhabi Police were prepared to handle such cases professionally. He asked people not to hesitate to report such blackmailing attempts to the police so that criminals can be arrested immediately.

Abu Dhabi Police recently launched an awareness campaign on various media channels and social networking sites about the dangers of falling for online begging. The police asked the public to be vigilant and not trust strangers to avoid being blackmailed.
