Sharjah: Sharjah Police recently caught 86 men of various nationalities who had either absconded from their sponsors and were staying illegally in the country or had entered the country illegally, a senior police official at Sharjah Police said yesterday.

Lieutenant Colonel Abdul Razzaq Asad, director of Al Saja’a police station, urged companies to work closely with the authorities to make sure their employees are working legally.

“Illegal residents and those who have run away from their sponsors should not be given jobs. The campaign will continue until all illegal workers are removed,” he said.

The police said those caught had entered the country illegally or absconded from their sponsors or were staying illegally in the country. They took part in activities such as hawking goods on streets or begging to earn quick money.

The arrested have been referred to the public prosecution for further action.

Sharjah Police inspectors have been involved in an extensive and intensive inspection of Al Saja’a Industrial area, looking for people who have violated the UAE residency laws.

He stressed that illegal residents pose a threat to society, and many of them were involved in crimes.
