Sharjah: Police in Sharjah have confiscated 20 unlicensed modified vehicles in one day after getting complaints from residents on Tuesday afternoon.

The vehicles were confiscated on Tuesday night to prohibit motorists from disturbing the peace in the neighbourhood.

Brigadier Siaf Ziri Al Shamisi, commander-in-chief of Sharjah Police, said that the campaign will continue during the year after police received numerous complaints from people in residential areas about the inconvenience caused by some vehicles, especially at night.

Brigadier Al Shamisi said the crackdown on noisy vehicles in residential areas was part of a campaign to enforce traffic rules. “The move is aimed at stopping motorists from riding in a reckless manner and disturbing the peace of neighbourhoods,” he said

“They were organising illegal rallies and performing stunts on the roads and causing chaos and panic among other motorists,” he said

Confiscated vehicles included cars whose engines [were modified] to make loud noises,” he said.

Twelve vehicles were confiscated near Sharjah University City Road and eight between Talaa and Al Khazamyah Road.

Police patrols will focus on modified vehicles and groups that organise illegal rallies.

The campaign will continue during the year and cover all roads in the emirate of Sharjah, which has recently witnessed a number of tragic accidents due to speeding.

Brigadier Al Shamisi said that many police patrols have been deployed on roads known to be frequented by the youth for street racing and other illegal practices involving modification of cars to increase speed.

He urged residents to report such incident to police by calling 901.
