Abu Dhabi: The crime rate in Abu Dhabi fell 18 per cent while there was a 20 per cent decrease in bounced cheque cases in 2014 compared with 2013, statistics released by the Abu Dhabi Police have revealed.

According to Brigadier Maktoum Al Shareefi, Director of the Capital Police Directorate, there were 17,714 criminal reports filed with Abu Dhabi Police stations, while in 2013 there was 21,515 criminal reports filed, a decrease of 3,801.

Brig Al Shareefi attributed the fall in crime to the strict and effective security measures put in place by the police, as well as awareness drives launched by the Abu Dhabi Police Department aimed at curbing unruly social behaviour.

He added that the police leadership in Abu Dhabi would look to continue to provide the best policing services to the community, as well as to enhance the efficiency and performance of security staff members, with high quality training provided to guarantee proficiency in dealing with security issues that affect the community.

As well as a fall in crime rates in Abu Dhabi, there was also a fall in cases of bounced cheques reported, with 12,789 bounced cheques reported in 2014 compared with 15,927 in 2013, a decrease of 3,138.
