Dubai: Dubai Traffic Police issued 1,628 fines and impounded 149 vehicles during the 44th National Day break, an official said on Monday.

Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of Dubai Traffic Police, said: “Some people take advantage of any festivity to drive recklessly, speed and break traffic rules, which puts their lives and that of others in danger.”

Eighty-two vehicles were impounded in the areas under Deira Traffic Police’s jurisdiction and 67 from Bur Dubai.

Col Al Mazroui said that overall, this year saw a significant improvement from previous years in the traffic situation during the celebrations, with the exception of a few drivers who committed violations.

Traffic Police in the Deira area issued 1,472 fines, and 156 fines were issued in Bur Dubai.

Of the 1,628 fines issued, 265 were issued for parking in undesignated areas, 229 for crossing the road from undesignated areas and 186 for vehicles obstructing the flow of traffic.

Another 162 fines were issued to drivers not abiding by lane discipline, 42 fines for littering, 32 for driving a noisy vehicle and 25 for reckless driving.

Another 531 fines were issued for other violations.
