Dubai: An X-ray technician has been jailed for six months for stealing Dh30,000 in cash and a cheque worth Dh3,500 from the medical clinic where he worked.

The Filipino technician, R.B., walked into the office of the clinic’s manager and stole the cash and cheque from the safe after he opened it with a key he had kept with him in August.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted R.B. of robbing from his workplace.

Presiding judge Urfan Omar said the accused will be deported after serving his sentence.

The defendant pleaded guilty when he showed up in court.

“I stole the money and cash,” R.B. told the judge as he requested leniency.

An Indian accountant testified he discovered the heist when he tried to open the safe to take the money and deposit it in the bank.

“When I entered the manager’s office, I realised the safe was open. I informed my manager immediately and he reported it to the police. Upon examining CCTV cameras, we discovered that R.B. had sneaked into the office the previous night and stole the money,” the accountant claimed.

An Egyptian employee testified: “The defendant switched off the lights when he entered the office to steal from the safe … he was not aware that the surveillance camera’s system functions on night-vision mode.”

The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 13 days.
