Dubai: Three visitors have been jailed for two years each for breaking into a private clinic in Jumeirah and stealing Dh65,000 worth of gold, jewellery, diamonds and cash from a doctor’s office.

The Chinese trio used a crowbar to break into the clinic at night and steal cash in different foreign currencies as well as valuables in July 2015.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the trio of wrecking private property, breaking into the clinic and stealing valuables and cash.

The trio had pleaded not guilty and denied being responsible for the missing valuables and cash from a Syrian doctor’s office.

According to Tuesday’s ruling, presiding judge Mohammad Jamal said the defendants will be deported after serving their jail terms.

The doctor testified that one of his assistants called him at 9am and informed him that some burglars had broken into his office.

“I went to the clinic and discovered that someone had broken in and destroyed my office’s door and stolen my cash and valuable items from the safe. Everything inside the office was turned upside down. I reported the matter to the police,” he said.

A policeman said a defendant had been involved in a heist that was carried out using the same modus operandi.

“We brought in that defendant for questioning and he admitted that he and the three Chinese [involved in this case] had been involved in several robberies. We apprehended the other three defendants shortly after that. One of them [a visitor] claimed that he had broken into the clinic on his own and stolen the cash and valuables. He said the other two defendants did not participate in the heist,” testified the policeman.

The primary judgement remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
