Dubai: A soldier has been accused of running his car over a policeman and injuring his knee when a police patrol was dispatched to apprehend him, a court heard on Wednesday.

Dubai Police were notified that the 30-year-old Emirati soldier was wanted by the police of another emirate and when a patrol team went to arrest him, he resisted arrest and assaulted one of the officers in August.

The patrol team was dispatched to a luxury hotel where the soldier was reported to have been present inside his vehicle.

When law enforcement officers approached the 30-year-old to apprehend him from the car, he drove off and intentionally ran over one of the policemen, who sustained a knee injury.

As police officers tried to block his way, the soldier reversed the vehicle, rammed a police patrol vehicle and caused damage.

Prosecutors accused the suspect of assaulting a policeman by running his car over him and causing him an injury as he resisted arrest and tried to abscond. He was also accused of deliberately hitting a police car and wrecking it.

Records did not specify whether the suspect was apprehended following the incident.

The suspect failed to show up before the Dubai Court of First Instance where he was scheduled to enter his plea on Wednesday.

The injured policeman claimed to prosecutors that the incident happened in front of a luxury hotel in Bur Dubai.

“We received a notification from the other emirate’s police that the 30-year-old suspect was wanted. A police patrol was dispatched to apprehend the suspect … he resisted arrest and refused to comply. When I stood in front of his car to prevent him from driving away, he drove his car towards me and knocked me down. I sustained a serious injury in my knee. He also rammed the police car with his vehicle deliberately and took off,” the policeman testified to prosecutors.

Presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi will sentence the suspect in absentia on December 29.
