Dubai: An AC technician has been accused of intentionally killing his co-worker by pounding him repeatedly with a wooden stick after the latter abused his family verbally.
The 42-year-old Indian technician was said to have been sitting with his countryman co-worker eating dinner and drinking alcohol in April.
The two men got into a heated argument in a villa under construction where they had been drinking before, according to records. The co-worker cursed the technician and his wife and family.
The 42-year-old then grabbed the stick and repeatedly assaulted the co-worker, who fell down unconscious and couldn’t do anything since he was too drunk.
The technician then returned to his labour accommodation and asked his colleague if he had alcohol in an attempt to convince the latter to go with him to the villa and check if there was any alcohol while his main aim was to check what had happened to the victim.
The accommodation’s security guard reported the matter to the police once the co-worker’s body was found lying in a pool of blood.
The technician confessed to the interrogating policemen that he assaulted the victim following a heated argument.
Prosecutors accused the suspect of intentionally killing his co-worker.
The suspect admitted before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Thursday that he assaulted the victim but did not intend to kill him.
He told presiding judge Urfan Omar that he used the stick in the assault but did not have any intention to kill the victim.
A police lieutenant testified to prosecutors that they were alerted that a man’s body had been found in Al Quoz on a Friday.
“We went to the location instantly and brought in a number of witnesses who were present at the villa at the time of the alleged assault. During interrogation, the suspect admitted that he had dinner and drank alcohol with the co-worker at 8pm the previous night, during which they had a heated argument. Then the technician assaulted the deceased with a stick because the latter had cursed him and his wife, according to the suspect’s statement,” the lieutenant claimed to prosecutors.
Dubai Police’s forensic examiner, who examined the victim’s body, confirmed that the latter died of profuse bleeding that affected the blood circulation and was heavily drunk to defend himself.
Presiding judge Omar said the court will appoint a lawyer to defend the suspect when it reconvenes on August 10.
