Dubai: A man who pretended to be a policeman to forcibly enter a woman’s flat before raping and robbing her has been jailed for six years.

The jobless 24-year-old and his friend were heavily drunk when they barged into the flat in Naif in January 2017.

The duo knocked at the door and, when the woman responded, they claimed to be policemen and forced their way into the flat. Then they took out long knives and asked the two women occupants of the flat to hand over their money.

The 24-year-old accused then took away Dh720 from one of the two women before he forced her to undress and raped her at knifepoint. His accomplice took the other woman to the other corner of the flat and had forced sex with her.

The women’s friends came to know they were in trouble and rushed to help them. The friends banged loudly at the door and shouted they would call police after which the Pakistani defendants panicked and rushed out to the flat’s balcony in an attempt to find an escape route.

One of the men tried to clamber down the water pipes but a pipe snapped and he plunged to his death.

Police apprehended the 24-year-old culprit who failed to escape.

On Sunday, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the accused of impersonating a policeman, raping a woman at knifepoint and stealing her cash and mobile.

“I was drunk and do not remember what happened or what I did,” the accused had deposed earlier.

Presiding judge Mohammad Jamal ordered that the accused be deported following the completion of his jail term.

The woman said someone knocked at her door but she did not see who it was because the person had put his finger on the ‘magic eye’.

“When I asked who had knocked, someone said police. I felt scared and answered the door quickly. Two men stormed into the flat and flashed long knives and they closed the door,” she said describing how she was first robbed and then raped at knifepoint.

“The duo escaped to the window when they heard those who had knocked at the door say they would call the police. The defendants tried to climb their way down the water pipes. One of them fell to his death while the other was arrested,” she testified.

A police sergeant said the women alleged that the two intruders brandished 20-cm-long knifes when they stormed into the flat.

“The raped woman claimed to me that the accused raped her at knifepoint; meanwhile the dead man took her friend to other bed … but she claimed she didn’t know what happened between them,” the sergeant said.

Sunday’s ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
