Dubai: A student has been accused of stalking a fellow student on campus, threatening to have her jailed and using profane language during a heated argument.

The 23-year-old Jordanian female student was said to be with a female friend when her 24-year-old countryman student walked up towards her and started following her around on the campus in Dubai Academic City in January.

According to records, the 24-year-old held out his arms wide as he approached his college-mate and tried to hug her before she moved back to avoid him.

The woman’s friend called her fiance, who rushed to the scene. The fiance and the 24-year-old indulged in a heated argument before the latter allegedly used blasphemous language and also threatened to have the 23-year-old woman jailed.

Police were summoned to the college and the student who started the ruckus was taken into custody. Prosecutors accused the 24-year-old of profanity, breaching the woman’s modesty, stalking her, and verbally threatening her.

The Jordanian pleaded not guilty when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Wednesday. “I did not curse God, and she is the one who threatened me,” the suspect told presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi.

“How did she threaten you?” the presiding judge asked the suspect.

“She told me that she would send me to jail and I replied that this is a land of justice and that she is the one who will be jailed. I did not threaten her,” the 24-year-old maintained.

The 23-year-old woman testified before prosecutors that the suspect tried to block her way while she was with her Kuwaiti friend in the campus. “I dodged the suspect. Then he tried to hug me but I moved away and prevented him from doing so. Then my friend called her fiance, who came to the location and spoke to the suspect. The fiance came and kept the suspect away from me and told him to discuss the issue with him.

“The 24-year-old was nervous. I heard him cursing God. We all moved out to the parking and tried to resolve the matter amicably before calling the police. The suspect came to me and said that he would have me jailed. Half an hour later the police arrived, then they apprehended the suspect,” she told prosecutors.

The court will hear prosecution witnesses when it reconvenes on April 26.
