Dubai: A maid has been accused of stealing two mobile phones from her sponsor on different occasions before a policewoman stopped her at a metro station.

The 26-year-old Ugandan maid, E.N., was said to have stolen a phone worth Dh250 on one occasion and then another worth Dh300 on the second occasion before she was stopped while entering a metro carriage without a ticket in August.

Prosecutors accused E.N. of robbing her sponsor.

Jail wardens did not bring the suspect and present her before the Dubai Court of First Instance where she was scheduled to enter her plea on Thursday.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said the suspect abused her work as a maid and stole her sponsor’s two mobiles that contained two SIM cards.

An Egyptian person testified to prosecutors that E.N. was sponsored by his brother, for whom she worked as a maid.

“One Saturday morning we discovered that she had absconded. An hour later, a policewoman called us and informed us that E.N. went straight to her and she had a phone in her hand at the metro station. My mother told the policewoman to keep the phone with her and not to give it to E. N. A few hours later we received another phone call from another policewoman at another metro station and we were informed that the maid had been stopped while trying to ride the metro carriage without a ticket. She was also carrying another phone. When we searched for my dad’s phone and didn’t find it, we realised that she had stolen it,” the witness claimed.

Records said the Ugandan woman was taken into custody and she admitted to police interrogators that she had stolen from her sponsor.

Presiding judge Urfan Omar adjourned the case until the defendant is brought from detention and presented in court on November 7.
