Dubai: A driver has been accused of disfiguring a visitor’s face with a razor after a scuffle.

The visitor was said to be looking for a job in Dubai when a common friend introduced him to the 35-year-old driver on the pretext of helping him find a job in a security company in June.

The Ghanaian paid the Pakistani driver Dh14,500 to help him find a job, according to records, but the disagreement started when the 35-year-old was late in finding him a job.

Having lost hope of being hired and not wanting to lose his money, the visitor called the driver and asked him to give him back his money.

The Pakistani was believed to have dodged the visitor repeatedly and continued to avoid him until the Ghanaian decided to visit his house in Al Nahda.

Leaving his countrywoman girlfriend waiting in his car, the Ghanaian went up to the third floor and when he called the Pakistani suspect, they had a heated argument before the 35-year-old assaulted the Ghanaian with a razor.

When the girlfriend realised that her countryman had been late in coming down to the car, she went up to check and saw the Pakistani suspect assaulting him in the corridor. She rushed down to the car and called the police.

Police rushed to the building and apprehended the driver.

Prosecutors accused the suspect of assaulting the Ghanaian and causing him a permanent and unhealable disfigurement in his face.

The suspect pleaded not guilty when he defended himself before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Monday.

The visitor told prosecutors that the suspect assaulted him when he went to get back his Dh14,500 that he had paid to find a job.

“A common friend introduced me to the suspect. He took money to find me a job but when he failed to do so, I called him and asked him to give back my money. Having avoided me several times, I went to his residence … when I called him and asked him to return my money, we had a heated argument. Then he assaulted me with a razor. My countrywoman was the one who reported the matter to the police and she called the ambulance as well,” he testified to prosecutors.

Records said the suspect failed to get rid of the razor that got stuck in the window when he tried to throw it away as the police were apprehending him.

The trial continues.
