Dubai: An engineer who got drunk at a nightclub and molested a woman who was heading to her hotel room with her husband was jailed for three months.
The 28-year-old Singaporean woman was walking behind her husband in the corridor of the hotel when the 26-year-old Jordanian engineer came out of the nightclub in June. The husband was a few steps ahead of his wife, when he heard his wife screaming in the middle of the corridor.
The husband turned around and rushed to the aid of his wife who told him that the Jordanian had groped her before running away.
The Singaporean man rushed to the lobby and notified the security guards who stopped the Jordanian from leaving the place and called police.
Following on-site investigation, police handcuffed the engineer and took him into custody.
The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the defendant of molesting the woman and consuming alcohol.
According to the primary ruling, the accused was also fined Dh3,000 for drinking alcohol.
He pleaded not guilty when he appeared in court and contended that he did not grope the victim.
“It happened by mistake. I accidentally bumped into her in the corridor … I had consumed liquor,” the accused told the court.
The woman testified that the defendant groped her but fled when she yelled at him.
The husband said that security guards in the hotel’s lobby helped him restrain the suspect until police arrived and apprehended him.
The accused will be deported after serving his punishment.
