Dubai: Two jobless men have been accused of breaking a car window glass and stealing eight laptops that were left in the back seat of the vehicle at 10pm. A Pakistani sales manager of a computers store was said have closed the shop and kept the eight laptops in the back seat when he parked the car in front of his residence in March 2016.

When the manager woke up the next day and went to the car to head for work, according to records, he discovered that the window glass had been broken and the laptops missing.

The manager reported the matter to the police and forensic examiners lifted fingerprints from the car for further investigation.

In the meantime, a 51-year-old Nigerian man got arrested for his involvement in a similar theft from another car.

During police interrogation, the 51-year-old Nigerian admitted that he had been involved along with a 38-year-old compatriot in the theft of laptops from the complainant’s car. Police also arrested his 38-year-old accomplice.

Prosecutors accused the Nigerian duo of using an iron rod to break the window glass and stealing the Dh8,400 worth of laptops at night.

The suspects pleaded guilty when they appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Tuesday.

Asked by presiding judge Mohammad Jamal if they could afford to hire a lawyer to defend them, the suspects said they could not.

The Pakistani manager claimed to prosecutors that he kept the laptops in his brother’s car and went up to his flat.

“When I woke up in the morning and went to the car, I realised that the glass was broken and the laptops were stolen. I called the police,” he told the prosecutors.

A police sergeant claimed to prosecutors that the suspects were apprehended for their involvement in several other thefts carried out using the same modus operandi.

The court will appoint a lawyer to defend the suspects when it reconvenes on August 22.
