Dubai: A drunk traveller has been accused of beating up a policeman who tried to restrain him from walking in a prohibited zone in Dubai International Airport.

The Russian traveller, 33, was said to have been inebriated when he opened the door of a prohibited zone at the Dubai International Airport and walked towards the aircraft’s area in November. As he continued walking on the tarmac, a duty policeman was alerted and he rushed to restrain the traveller and bring him back to the airport building, according to the records.

The Russian refused to stop or respond to the policeman’s orders, and continued walking. The policeman caught the drunk traveller and pulled him back, but he resisted and assaulted the cop.

Police later detained the traveller after the policeman reported the incident.

Prosecutors accused the suspect of resisting a law enforcement officer and assaulting him.

The Russian suspect did not appear in the Dubai Court of First Instance.

Last week, the Dubai Misdemeanours Court fined the Russian Dh3,000 for consuming liquor.

The policeman testified before prosecutors that he was on duty when he was alerted that the suspect had opened an emergency door and walked out.

“The suspect entered a prohibited zone where nobody is allowed to go due to the potential risks to aircraft movement. I rushed towards the suspect and asked him to come back … he ignored me and continued walking. I persistently asked him to stop and return, but when he didn’t comply, I grabbed him. He resisted me ferociously and beat me. He pushed me, jabbed his two fingers in my eyes, kicked me in my belly and ran away. My injuries impeded me from chasing him but I contacted my co-workers and notified them about what had happened,” he told prosecutors.

Presiding judge Mohammad Jamal adjourned the case until the suspect attends the upcoming hearing on February 4.
