Dubai: A jobless man begged a court judge on Wednesday to save him from the poison of drugs and admit him to a rehabilitation centre to treat him from addiction.

Drug enforcement officers apprehended the 32-year-old Emirati man, R.H., at his house in Nad Al Hammar for possessing and consuming drugs following an informant’s tip off in March.

“Yes, I admit that I possessed and consumed drugs … but please save me. Save us [drug addicts] from this poison,” argued R.H. as he pleaded guilty before the Dubai Court of First Instance.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said the suspect possessed 1.53gm of hashish, 7gm of methamphetamine and 55 banned pills for consumption purposes. He also consumed morphine, amphetamine and methamphetamine.

Requesting the court’s permission to speak, R.H. told presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi: “We consume drugs, get detained, prosecuted and then jailed for four years … we go into prison, serve the imprisonment and then we get released. Then we go again. Take drugs. Spend four years in jail and walk out … this has been happening back and forth. Your Honour, I have been going in and out of jail since 1998. I lost my father, mother and sister and could not attend their funeral since I was in jail.

“Every time an addict is imprisoned for four years, during which he does nothing besides completing his punishment, and then gets released from prison. But we are not being cured. This is poison … I cannot stand this any more. Your Honour, we are not killers or rapists. We are sick individuals … we want to be cured from this poison. Serving four years behind bars does not cure me ... I beg you to send me to a rehabilitation centre for treatment. Please help me, Sir. I want to live a normal life … I went to get cured of addiction, get married, have a family and work … I want a normal life.”

Presiding judge Al Shamsi will hand out a ruling on May 25.
