Dubai: A driver, who disfigured a visitor’s face with a razor after the latter fought with the former over the money he had given to find him a job, lost his appeal and will spend three months in jail.

The Ghanaian visitor was searching for a job when a common friend introduced him to the 35-year-old Pakistani driver to help him find a job in a security company in June 2017.

The victim paid the Pakistani Dh14,500 to help him find a job but the disagreement started when the accused was late to land the Ghanaian in the promised job.

Feeling hopeless and not wanting to lose his money, the victim phoned the defendant and asked him to give back his money.

The Pakistani avoided the visitor repeatedly until the Ghanaian victim paid him a visit at his house in Al Nahda.

Leaving his girlfriend waiting in his car, the victim went up to the third floor and when he called the Pakistani, they had a heated argument before the accused assaulted the Ghanaian with a razor.

When the girlfriend recognised that the victim was late in returning to the car, she went up to check on him and saw the Pakistani assaulting him in the corridor.

She fled and called the police.

In November, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the defendant of attacking the victim with a razor and causing him a permanent disfigurement in his face.

The accused appealed his primary ruling before the Appeal Court and sought to acquit himself.

The defendant pleaded not guilty in the appellate court.

Presiding judge Saeed Salem Bin Sarm dismissed the appeal and upheld the convict’s three-month jail term.

According to the appellate ruling, the defendant will be deported after serving the jail term.

The visitor said the accused assaulted him when he went to claim back his Dh14,500 that he had paid the latter to find a job.

“A friend introduced me to the defendant. He took money to find me a job … but when he failed to do so, I asked him to pay me back my money. I went to his residence after he had been avoiding me … when I asked him for my money, we had a heated argument. He assaulted me with a razor. My girlfriend called the ambulance,” he testified.

The accused failed to get rid of the razor that got stuck in the window when he tried to throw it away as the police apprehended him.

The appellate ruling remains subject to appeal before the Cassation Court.
