Dubai: A carpenter, who threatened to kill his co-workers and the labour accommodation supervisor was jailed for three months.

The 27-year-old Indian carpenter, S.K., pointed a knife in the face of a group of his colleagues at the main yard of the labour accommodation and threatened to kill his countryman supervisor in August.

The defendant was drunk when he pulled out the knife, according to records, and threatened to kill anyone if he was not sent back to his homeland.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted S.K. of verbally threatening to kill the supervisor, M.S., and his colleagues.

Presiding judge Urfan Omar said S.K. will be deported after serving his jail term.

The accused had pleaded not guilty and denied threatening to kill anyone.

He maintained he was drunk and did not remember anything.

The supervisor told prosecutors the incident happened at the labour accommodation in Jebel Ali at 9.30pm.

“A worker came to me and told me that the defendant was heavily drunk and acting rowdily and making trouble. Immediately I rushed to the location to check what had been taking place. I saw a number of workers grouped up around S.K. who seemed too drunk and had a knife in his hand. When I asked him about his problem, he said that he would kill me or kill himself or anyone else if he was not deported. I felt scared as he sounded very serious and willing to execute his threat … I called the police,” M.S. told prosecutors.

The defendant was quoted as confessing to prosecutors that he threatened his colleagues.

The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 13 days.
