Dubai: A wanted businessman has been accused of turning violent with three policemen, threatening and abusing them, a court heard on Tuesday.
A police team had apprehended the 47-year-old Iranian businessman, who was wanted over dud cheque complaints, and brought him in for questioning in October.
Once the police staff took his statement and asked him to hand over his personal belongings to confine him, according to records, the 47-year-old behaved violently in the police station.
The Iranian turned violent with three policemen, called them bad names, threatened them and resisted arrest while he was being taken into the confinement.
Record said the businessman had refused to hand over his personal belongings and acted violently with the three policemen and used abusive language.
When the businessman became uncontrollably violent and brutal and acting upon their high commander’s directives, the policemen tased the 47-year-old, brought him under control and then handcuffed him.
Prosecutors accused the Iranian suspect of abusing and assaulting three policemen and injuring them. He was also accused of verbally threatening the policemen and intentionally damaging the confinement’s door that he repeatedly kicked.
The suspect pleaded not guilty and refuted all the charges when he appeared in the Dubai Court of First Instance on Tuesday.
One of the assaulted policemen told prosecutors that the incident happened shortly after the suspect was apprehended and brought in to the police station.
“As soon as we asked him to turn in his personal belongings, he refused and started shouting, cursing and offending us in Arabic. We tried to calm him down and told him that he was wanted and had to be detained. I explained to him that he had to give in his belongings as part of the security procedures. He pushed me and assaulted me with his mobile … I suffered pain in my chest and he injured my thumb. When he tried to walk out of the room where we had put him, he kicked the door forcefully and damaged it. Then our superior ordered us to tase the suspect, who is muscular and plays martial arts … we restrained him and put him in the confinement. While we were handcuffing him, he jumped and banged his head to the wall … he also tried to unshackle the handcuffs,” he testified to prosecutors.
Another policeman told prosecutors: “The suspect used abusive language and he called us bad names. He also threatened us by saying ‘I am Iranian and I will show you what I can do’.”
Records said the suspect caused Dh260 worth of damages to police properties.
Presiding judge Mohammad Jamal will hear prosecution witnesses when the court reconvenes on January 3.
