Dubai: More than 270 tonnes of waste from farmhouses was collected during a three-day desert clean-up campaign under the slogan ‘My Environment, My responsibility’.

An estimated 150 people volunteered for the campaign, which was organised by the Ministry of Labour and Dubai Municipality.

Volunteers were dispatched to two areas in which farmhouses are located — Al Salal and Al Nukhra. Special machinery and equipment was given to them to help in the clean up process.

Nadia Al Muhairi, Director of the Guidance Department at the Ministry of Labour, said: “The campaign is dedicated to spreading an environmentally conscientious message and to instil a feeling of responsibility throughout the community. It is important for people to realise the importance of preserving the desert flora and fauna.”

Nadia said volunteers included employees from the organising departments and the private sector.

“Our volunteers managed to collect 270 tonnes of waste from nearby farmhouses. We are very pleased with the results of the campaign,” she said, “which also succeeded in raising awareness about volunteer work and instilling positive values about environmental preservation.”

Nadia stressed that it was also important to raise awareness on the dangers of plastic waste, which can have adverse effects on wildlife.
